Job Application Tips

When applying for a job, consider the following tips for completing an application form:

•  READ the application form thoroughly BEFORE answering any questions.

•  Follow the DIRECTIONS on the application form carefully.

•  DO NOT LEAVE BLANK SPACES! If an item does not apply, write "Not Applicable" or "N/A."

•  Give COMPLETE and ACCURATE information, especially dates.

•  SPELL all words correctly and fully. Do NOT use abbreviations or acronyms.

•  PRINT your information and PROOFREAD twice.

•  Include ALL experience, including volunteer work. Generally you do not need to go beyond 10 years.

•  SIGN the form properly (full legal name; do not use nicknames).

•  Keep descriptions and information as POSITIVE as possible.

•  Make certain the application is NEAT, READABLE and COMPLETE.

•  KEEP A COPY of all submitted applications for your records (if possible).

•  Attach your RESUME.

•  CAREFULLY consider wording used for the reason you left a job. It is best not to use the words "personal" or "quit".

•  Use WORDS and phrases on the application that apply that are listed in their job ad or description.

•  IDENTIFY and SECURE permission from your references in advance. Be sure you have ACCURATE and COMPLETE addresses and phone numbers.

•  When desired SALARY is requested, write "open" or "negotiable."

•  If you are not a U.S. Citizen, explain your STATUS.

•  REFERENCES don't necessarily have to be professional. You can use volunteer contacts or if you are a student, use your teachers. In all cases, ask for permission prior to using the person for a reference.

•  List your most recent EDUCATION first. Include vocational schools and training programs as well as college and high school.

•  REVIEW what you have written. Remember, COMPLETENESS, ACCURACY and NEATNESS is the key!

It is a good idea to get a blank application to complete ahead of time for you to complete for your own information. The information is fairly standard so this will assure that you know all the information necessary to complete the application. Do not, however, use this in place of the company's application. Review your copy before entering the location so the information is fresh in your mind.
